Nutrition and Health – Spring 2021 – March 3rd- Questions about the Diet Assignment and Obesity Explosion Quizzes

Diet Assignment–

Question:  Good morning professor Dixon, I am _________, part of your nutrition class that meets on Tuesday’s and fridays. I have a question regarding the diet assignment. When inputting the food that best relates to my daily meal plan, the total intake calorie came out to be super high (31k). I want my project to be as accurate as possible. What is it that you recommend I do in order to meet this requirements?   Sincerely,

See Screen Shot with high Calories

Answer:  Hi,  You had to have made a mistake in some of the foods you entered into the program.  You need to go back and check all of your foods and find the one – most likely a serving size is wrong – you super sized everything!  LOL  JLD

Hi,  Did you figure this out?   I just looked at your screen shot again and I noticed that you have 7,502 grams of carbohydrate, which comes to 30,008 Calories.  That is impossible!   Joe Dixon

Question:  Hi! Hope you are both doing well 🙂 I was hoping one of you could answer a question I have about the diet assignment? When I inputted my food into the database and analyzed it, it gave me a few interesting results. One of those being that fluoride was 0% of my DV, but it also claimed I had 10 mg of it. So I guess I’m just a bit confused on what that means.

Answer:  Hi ________,    Thank you for your email.  The nutrients with a red dot are not supported by the database.  In the instructions it says not to worry or use Fluoride because you get much more of it from the toothpaste you use.  Also, don’t use choline as it is not a necessary nutrient for most of us.   Joe Dixon

Question:   Hi Professor Dixon,   This is _________ from Nutrition and Health 255 spring class.  I had a question regarding the diet assignment we have to do. I’ve been keeping track of my meals and I realized all the nutrition serving size units are in metric system because I’m currently in South Korea and I cannot find the brands for the food I am eating. I was wondering if I have to convert every nutrition unit from metric system to the U.S. measurement units or if I can just use the metric system in my assignment. Thank you.

Answer: Hi _________,  Thank you for your email.  This is a great and important question.  What you need to do is convert the value you have for a food item to the units that are used in the database. So if you have grams you can convert to tablespoons etc.  This is easy to do using the Internet and the many converting sites.  In some cases you may have to make a best guess on how much to put into the database.  One important take home message from this assignment is how difficult it is to get a very accurate record of what you eat in one day.  Imagine doing this for a week?   Sincerely,    joe Dixon

Question:  Hi Professor Dixon, I hope you are doing well. I haven’t really come across many issues with the powerpoint portion of the diet assignment until now and it is one of the last parts to it. I noticed in your calculation for fat (saturated, polyunsaturated, and monounsaturated) you’re total amount of fat says 84g, but in the charts from the evaluation it says 92g. If I use the total fat value obtained from the chart the 3 fat percentages do not add to 100%. I am unsure of which value I should be losing, or how you obtained your value of 84g. I hope you can help!    Regards,

Answer: Hi,  Use the values from the ones you totaled up (sat, poly, and mono) and don’t worry about the total from the program.  In this way they will add to 100% and you can calculate the percent of each kind of fat.  Everyone’s diet is different and I am not sure why it does this for some people.   I am doing well and I hope you are safe and healthy.    Sincerely,  Joe Dixon

Obesity Explosion Quizzes—

Question:  Dear Professor Dixon,    Good evening professor. I am _______________, a student from your Nutrition and Health Section1. I have some questions regarding the grading of obesity explosion quizzes. Are the quizzes graded based on the completion of the quizzes, or the scores obtained from the quizzes? If it’s based on the scores, are they graded on the average from all attempts in a chapter quiz? Or it takes the best score from all the attempts in a chapter quiz?   I look forward to your reply.    Best regards,

Answer:    Hi _________,    If you complete all the quizzes you get the full amount of points.  You are supposed to get 100% on each quiz before you go on.  There is a problem with that app so I am letting students just progress when they can.  But I can see the percent obtained on each quiz.  You can take the quizzes an unlimited amount of times. The main thing is to read all the chapters and finish the quizzes.  With the size class I had to make this self-study!   I hope you are safe and healthy!
